Grass stores carbon

As it grows, grass takes carbon dioxide – a greenhouse gas - out of the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide is turned into organic material in leaves, stems and roots. As these die carbon is transferred to the soil where it is stored long term as soil organic carbon. Taking carbon out of the atmosphere helps to reduce climate change. Well-fed grass lawn can remove as much carbon in one year as a tree does in 20 years.

Grass may be the best thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint.

• Calculate your Carbon Offset

Use this calculator to see how much carbon your grass can remove.
1 square metre of well fed grass can store about 108g of carbon per year.

Put the number of square metres of grass you have or could have into the calculator to see how much carbon you are storing or could store each year.
